US Bank - A service charge to cash their own check?

I recently stopped at a US bank located in Duluth, MN to cash two checks drawn on the US bank. I don't have an account with US Bank.
I do have several photo ID's that should satisfy even the closest scrutiny.
Since I wasn't a "member" I was told there was a $5.00 service charge per check. How the *** can someone charge a service fee to accept their own check? These folks (US bank) are nothing but crooks.
I won't be accepting anymore checks drawn on a US Bank. Any of their customers will be paying cash.
Location: Saint Joseph, Minnesota

As of today US Bank charges $7 and several other banks charge a % of the check to cash it. If I used one of these banks, I would close my accounts so fast their heads would spin off and roll out the door. This practice just blows my mind and I can't believe people still stay with them.
Had the same issue today, they wanted to charge 7 dollars
That's what I was just charged as well
A bank charges to cash their own checks idiots!
HOW TO GET AROUND CHASE BANK CASHING FEES!
I am a General Contractor:
The reason that Chase wanted to charge me $8.00 to cash their memberโs check was, โyou donโt have an account in our bankโ. I ask the manager, โwhat additional process for the check was required that cost $8.00 for a nonmember?
He said โnonโ. So, I simply took the check back and told the bank manager that I was going back to the check writer and charge her the $8.00 fee, 'for not having an account at my bank'. He told me โyou donโt have to do thatโโฆ.I told him โyes I doโ! I was not going to pay a fee for cashing their member's check when they have already paid $2.00 to $3.00 to obtain and write the check, and the same check processing was required if I was a member!
And, this absurd fee is the one of the reasons I didnโt have a Chase account in the first place. โItโs stupid!โ When I took the check back to my customer she said, โI did not know the bank was doing that, I am not going to pay Chase $10.00 or $11.00 every time I write a checkโ. SHE MOVED HER ACCOUNT TO ANOTHER BANK!
I have about 25 customers with Chase accounts. Each time I add $8.00 to $10.00 to their estimate to cover their Chase check cashing fee.
I am not paying for their members to maintain a Chase checking account! Chase cash more than 2,0000.00 checks yearly .....that's $25,000.00 a year that we are paying for their members to maintain their Chase checking account. 'WHO DO CHASE THINK THEY ARE? THE IRS!
SEND THE FEE BACK TO THEIR CUSTOMERโฆ.. DONโT PAY IT!....LET THEIR CUSTOMER DEAL WITH IT!
I agree, the bank has an agreement with its customer to cash checks the write to cover a dept owed. If the bank doesn't cover the whole check then the dept is not satisfied.
Another thing is that if I had an account with a different bank and deposit the check then the debtor bank does not charge my bank for cashing the check even if my bank does not have an account with them. How can they charge some people and not others.
Just paid a *** fee of 7.00 for a 100.00 check at this horrible bank. Bank of the worst charges 6.00. Unbelievable
My previous comment below was meant for the anonymous commenter a couple of posts down (the *** who is OK with issuing banks charging fees to cash checks).
How old are you? Because there was a time not so long ago when an issuing bank didn't do this.
Let me guess - you're an employee?
Absolutely despicable, and millenial terds like you with your complicity make it that much worse. Go straight to *** without passing go, you sycophant!
Couldn't agree more. They are one of the worst.
They got bailed out in 2008 to the tune of millions of dollars, and this is how they repay the taxpayers. *** you with a rusty ***, US Bank!
OK, I will start with stating I was an employee of USBank during the 'bailout' period. I will also state I disagree with many of the fees that institution charges ( including this one being discussed).
That stated,, during the 'bailout' USBank did not want to accept any of the funds , along with at least one other ( TCF) that I know of.
The Federal Government didn't give them any option in the matter. Those funds were set aside and when they were ALLOWED to return them they did.
I may not like them as a banking institution but I won't allow the perpetuation of misinformation when I can help it
They all charge a fee. $5.00 is a small fee, since they are taking the risk that the check isn't a forgery or that your id isn't fake.
Would you just cash a large check with your own cash? Of course not, the fee is small
STOP ENABLING THESE PEOPLE WITH YOUR COMMENTS! Credit Union don't charge a check cashing fee.
Small fee? Chase cash more than 2,0000.00 checks yearly .....that's $25,000.00 a year that we are paying for their members to maintain their Chase checking account. 'WHO DO CHASE THINK THEY ARE? THE IRS!

To the person who wrote that the bank has a right to take a fee because it is incurring risk of fraud well, you just an idiot! If I have a valid government issued ID then the issuing bank needs to give all of MY money to me.
THEIR customer promised it to me so itโs their job to give it to me. I deal with a. Person who has a tendency to bounce checks on me. He should be charged not me.
Iโve incurred the risk of taking his check not the bank. He uses US bank. If anyone has US Bank find another bank with better policies.
I will never do business with any bank that charges a fee to honor a check. Total hustle!
Guess our local US Bank charges $7.00 now to cash a check. My father wrote a check to his grandson to cash to go grocery shopping.
My father was just a little taken back. He's not going to pay that kind of a fee.
I told him to use the ATM.
No other bank in my area charges to cash a check on there own bank for a non member.
What a rip off consumers bank. I can go to wal mart and they only charge $3.00
Went into a US Bank here in Bend Oregon and they refused to cach a US Bank cashiers check without me paying a fee AND they said I wouldn't have to goto a different branch because they didn't have that much cash.. It was under 6000 dollars.
Went to the other branch and they refused to cash it without me paying a fee. I made a fuss and they almost had security throw me out of the bank
This was a US BANK cashiers check at a US Bank branch....

, when the check is cashed and funds are handed to the non customer and a few days later, it is covered to be a stolen check, the customer is not held responsible for the funds, the bank takes the loss, where should those funds come from? We charge the fee cor numerous reasons, including large fees to buy cash from the federal reserve.
So, we charge for the risk across the board as well as all of the cost to have cash available. Why are you not screaming about the bad guys that caused this over the years of check fraud, and the raising of fees to hold cash in vaults from the reserve or the insurance to cover the safety of having it at increased levels to cash all these checks for people that are not ligitamit customers
how'd you get a job as a bank manager with not knowing how to spell?
